Mr Alex Chowdhury
Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon
MBBS | MSc | FRCS (Tr&Orth)
I am a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in shoulder and elbow surgery.
I graduated from King’s College London in 2013 with distinctions in Clinical Medicine and Clinical Sciences. I subsequently completed a Master’s degree in Surgical Innovation at Imperial College London, developing an early interest in advancing surgical techniques and technology.
My orthopaedic training was undertaken in the Wessex Deanery, followed by an advanced fellowship in upper limb surgery at Hampshire Hospitals. This was followed by further international fellowship training in shoulder and elbow surgery in New Zealand, working at the University of Otago, Christchurch and Waikato Hospital. These fellowships provided high-volume experience in complex trauma, arthroscopic surgery and joint replacement.
I was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in December 2024.
My clinical practice encompasses all aspects of shoulder and elbow conditions, with particular interests in rotator cuff disease, shoulder arthritis, sports injuries, complex upper limb trauma, arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery and joint replacement.
Alongside my clinical work, I maintain an active academic and research interest, with multiple publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at national and international meetings. I have authored a textbook chapter on shoulder surgery and collaborate with international research groups to advance surgical techniques and patient outcomes.
I am committed to education and training, contributing to teaching and examination preparation. I am also involved in initiatives to improve sustainability within orthopaedic surgery.
I am a member of the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) and the British Elbow and Shoulder Society (BESS).
